Working one day a week

I've just been offered a job for one day a week and am thinking of finding a second part time job later. Does anyone have any experience of this? If so please discuss!

I teach 3 different things now, but I started with working just one hour a week and now work 15. I am self employed, so it must be easier to be PAYE (but maybe not).

What about those of you who work for two employers? Are there any?

I've just managed to get a job pt afternoons. I started 2 weeks ago (classed as a temp), and now it's school hols and they don't need me until September. I am currently applying for pt jobs that will fit in with first job - either temp or perm, pref mornings. As my official contract won't start until Sep, I can do any temp job pt or ft as "main job" until then and get taxed as normal. If I'm still working in a second job after Sep, I would get taxed on the second job at 22% of entire wages, and first job as normal.
If I get emergency taxed, I would get the refund back by xmas or April, paid through the wages from my permanent job. Hope you can understand all this.
As my perm job is term time only, if I had a second job, I would only work at that in the hols, but get paid for both jobs. Any pro rata holiday from the second job would be a bonus as I could use that in term time for things like appointments, sports days, or kids being off sick, childcare let downs etc.

I have 2 employers and work p/t for both, not sure what your question is?

jabberwocky · 14/07/2006 18:52

I do contract work and have, at any given time 2 - 4 clients/employers. I work about 2 1/2 days a week, occasionally more if the situation requires, but that doesn't happen more than every couple of months. IME it is the perfect solution. I get out of the house often enough to have some me-time but stay home enough to feel really engaged with what is going on there. I also feel like I have a lot more independence in my work as I can cut back or take on depending on how my mood/budget requires.

Thanks for your helpful comments particularly ones on tax.

Cam, I want to know, how one goes about finding a second job after accepting a first one at one day a week. Would this be awkward for the first employer in terms of informing them that you have a second job? Also, would you need to put them down as a referee when it asks current/recent employer as I've only just been offered it and putting them down as a reference wouldn't make sense.

I didn't inform the first job when I took the second, don't think its any of their business. I did put the first down as a reference as I had worked there longer and they were my current employer. Don't think my reference was taken up as such though.
