Handing in notice

Totally confused about when I should hand my notice in.... I have got a new job that I can start anytime I like but would probably be better to start after Christmas. My current job has a 1week notice period, I get paid monthly, 10 days in arrears and 20 days in advance on the 10th of every month.

I am being stupid I know, but when would be the best time to hand in notice so I don't have to pay money back to employer? One week before end of the month??

3rd December
This means you won't have been paid for days you don't work, and you should not need to chase for days you did work but were not included in the Dec pay cheque.
You may also have some pay owing for accrued holiday, so the final cheque should be larger than normal (but obviously not if you have used or exceeded leave allowance)

Thanks Festive - I think I understand now!

What I need to figure out now is whether I can afford to do without the full December pay as I'm guessing my holidays still to take won't make up the shortfall.....

You can leave it until later .....
in which case it would be sensible to do it on December 16th - which means your one weeks notice will take you up to the point that you had been paid in advance for, so again you won't have to be returning any money.
And any holiday pay will then be a bonus for Christmas!!

Yes that was what I was thinking! Kind if feel awful for handing in notice on December though - I work in retail - I'm not going to be popular!!! But Christmas off will be nice and new job to start in the new year will be amazing.

Thanks for your feedback Festive Smile

So on the 10th of the month you get paid for that month, yes? 10 days in arrears already done, and the remaining 20 days of the month in advance.

If you want to start after Christmas surely the best time is the week before the end of the month?? You will have been paid for those days already and can start new job after Christmas.

If you hand in your notice on the 16th and finish on 23rd, you'll owe them money as you will have been paid for the whole month on the 10th.

You can hand in your notice any time you want - the 1 week's notice is a minimum. It's always helpful to give your employer plenty of time to find a replacement for you - unless you're leaving because they're a crap employer!

Yeah they are crap, and yes I know I can leave when I want but what I'm really trying to avoid is working the Christmas period with them if I can afford to do it. If I work till the end of December I will be working long shifts on Xmas eve, Boxing Day etc. one of the many reasons to get out of the job!

I think if I make my last day just before Christmas then my holiday pay owing will make up the shortfall.

And I will be letting them know sooner than the weeks notice but I can't officially do it more than a week before i leave.
