Re-invigorate my career

Three and a half years ago I was in upper management (not C level but reporting directly to, and the board), running day to day operations and project managing a number of core/key projects. Due to myself falling ill and then my wife falling very seriously ill (cancer) and having to nurse her, and look after our young children, I was not working for a total of 18 months.

Since returning to work my career has taken a nose dive, I've dropped down to team manger and then team lead (different employers, both excellent salaries). In both circumstances working for managers who have lesser experience then myself in operations and projects, but knowing where my place was and behaved appropriately/accordingly.

I want to return to a senior decision making position, but I don't know how to proceed as my CV/Resume over the last two years does not indicate the roles I had prior to my career gap.

Any advice rt insights would be appreciated.

Do a functional CV rather than a time linear one. Focus on the skills and experience you have to offer.

There are plenty of examples online if you google. John Lees's book "Why You?" also has a good chapter on different ways of formatting CVs, depending on what stage of career you're at, what you want to be doing next - including handling time out for family reasons, unemployment and so on.
