Should be paid roughly if gross earnings are £35,000? Family man with three children, living with, but not married, to partner? No company car etc.

Would he pay less tax if we were married?

By my calculations you should be looking at just over £2,100 a month. There is no married man's tax allowance any more, extra benefits are paid according to the number of children/level of income coming into the household.

donth think makes a difference anymore does it?

Thats what I worked it out to be, Mrs Spoon. However he's only getting around £1,800. Do we ask the IR to check or his employer?

Thanks for answering

Is he on a Basic Rate code perhaps?

jay4568 · 07/07/2006 22:54

Don't know anything about tax codes to be honest. He recently got a pay rise and his tax code has changed but we don't seem to be seeing anymore money than we did before the rise iyswim?

Maybe he needs to contact the IR. Is it possible to phone them or will they need a letter?

Is his employer approachable? If so then they should be able to tell him whether all is OK with his tax code etc. There may be some reason he is on a different tax code, current tax code for most people is 503L at the moment but some people are put on a different tax code if they owe the IR money or if they are on a Week 1/Month 1 code.

His code is k282 so maybe he does owe.. surely they should have sent us a letter regarding this though?

His employers are reasonably approachable but the accountant works off site and only appears once a month so its difficult for him to ask.

I'll have to make sure he does next time he's in, thanks.

Here is a link to some info about 'K' codes, they tend to be given to either pensioners or someone receiving a "benefit in kind", possibly a company car.

It is possible that his employer has made a mistake and put the wrong code in or that the IR have made a mistake and issued the wrong code.

Hope you get it sorted out, sounds like a nightmare.
