Would a jewellery shop employ someone with badly bitten nails?!

Looking for jobs and there seem to be a fair few jewellers advertising for Xmas staff. I have a baaaaad nailbiting habit and my finger nails look well bitten. I am wondering if this will stand against me if I were to apply? I know they would never admit it but would YOU be put of as a customer?

I would not be put off, as long as they are clean, I wouldn't notice.

I dislike painted nails as they always look dirty to me.

Have you got enough money for get a mini manicure to tidy everything up and neaten them up? Short but neat would be fine, surely? And if you can hold of biting for a couple of weeks, you'd have enough nail?

I wouldn't have a problem with bitten nails but maybe with nails that have skin bitten around the outside,red and cracked or open skin. You will be touching people, fitting watches and putting on rings etc and open skin would be a no no for me.

If they are short, but clean and well-maintained then it wouldn't be an issue, but if they look messy, or as Mad says if the skin was badly bitten, then no I wouldn't have employed you (I used to manage a jewellers).

Thanks all and thanks Rockchick - good to get a jewellery person's perspective. I don't really know how bad they look to be honest - they don't really register with me. I guess I could push the cuticles back a bit. It's a lifelong habit - I managed to give up when I was pregnant with my first child because I was paranoid that I would ingest bacteria or some other harmful substance! Started biting them again when the stresses of motherhood kicked in.

I think if I went into a nailbar place they would laugh or wince.

I dont think they would notice or care, but if it really bothers you, get some acrylics put on for a few weeks. Might help you cut down on chewing them too (it did with me... a bit)
