Is there such a thing as a 9 to 6 job anymore

Just wondering as I seem to work really long hours and surely there must be jobs that pay a decent wage for normal working days?

no i dont think there is. I am susposes to do 37 hours a week but never do though we do do flexi time so get it back.

I work 9-5, 1hr for lunch, two 15min breaks [smug emoticon]

I work 3pm till 10pm with 1 half hour break.

Would hate to work 9-5 any time soon.

Ive got a brill. job nannying 3 days a week 9 till 5, very lucky hours for nannying. Used to do 630/730am till 630/730pm!

You see I put 9 to 6 because I never even contemplated that there may be a 9 to 5

It seems all the people I work with do more than the 9 to 6 and I wondered is it a London thing?

I guess it depends on what you do. I am lucky (dont mean to sound smug) as I have flexi time and work 7 hour 12 min days (not including lunch). Anything extra is accumulated as flexi. I work for the Home Office though so its a bit different to the private sector. Down side is I dont get paid as much as I think I deserve but I expect we all think that.

I also work 9-5 (flexi) and have an hour for lunch and am paid a decent wage (depending on what you class as decent!!!).

What do you do?

I work 9-5. Because I leave at 5pm.

I used to do 9-6 in previous job, was in a bigger, more, um, energetic, organisation. Considered 'normal' to work late.

Here we are discourged from a long hours culture and are nagged by boss if we are in office after 5-5.30 consistently...

Both public sector...

Whenever I worked longer than 9-5 I expected to be compensated for it.

Work to live not the other way round.

I htink it's a London thing - like the US, a place I will NEVER work in again so help me God.

I work 7.30 to 3.30 with an hour for lunch, it used to be 9 to 5 but the uni are flexible so I can fit my work around child care.... public sector again though.

I have fab hours and flexibility in my job, and my wage isn't bad (on par with teaching). I do:

Tues: 8:25 - 3:55
Wed/Thurs: 8:25 - 2:10

Dh is a solicitor for a good firm (not London though), is a salaried partner with a very good wage and still doesn't work silly hours. He generally arrives 8:15 (after dropping DD at nursery) and leaves around 6pm. He does a little work at home (maybe up to an hour, not lots) but definitely not silly amounts of work.

I think I am picking up a definite difference between public and private sector. I work in the private sector, big firm not central london but not too far out - still counted as london job.

I would def get more in central london and /or if I contracted, but would have a bigger more uncomfortable journey!

Plus not sure if contracting actually means you are able to work more flexibly, with childcare and the need to build up a client base surely not that easy

I work 9 - 6 (standard) and usually longer. it makes me very sad

RuthT, I work in a City firm, but no longer in frontlines (where I would be expected to work all hours). In a non-client facing support role. I work 830 to 1500 on the dot most days.

I work 8 until 4:15. Everyone knows I have to leave then to get my train to get DS and DD. I feel lucky, but I was determined .

I work in London for a medium sized accountancy firm, but not in a client facing role.
