So I have a McDonalds Application in front of me - do I fill it out?

Just how bad is a McJob going to be?

Some background - dh has lost a contract via his second (from home) job which has left us extremely tight for cash. Looking at various ways around it - I can't go back to "normal" work as I wouldn't earn enough to cover childcare which seems rather pointless all round, especially as I want to be at home if I possibly can before ds2 goes to school.

So that leaves only evenings to work in and as most of us have found out, there's not an awful lot of choice.

So do I fill out this application? Will it be dire, or will it be a lot better than I expect? Does anyone work for McDs or has done in the past that can give me a clue if this is a good route or not? My main concern is that I'll be under pressure to do extra hours outside of the times I'm able to work. My secondary concern is smelling of chip fat all the time

Thoughts?

I've worked at McDs (Christmas, when I was 19, in Manchester's Arndale Centre) too and - sorry - wouldn't do it again unless I was absolutely desperate. I think it probably does depend a great deal on the branch you work at and mine was particularly bad (manageress was a tinpot dictator of the worst kind) but I was treated as the lowest of the low. It's like being on a conveyor belt - you get put on a station for a shift and that's what you do 'til you finish - so you can spent all day 'dressing' Big Macs, or clearing tables (and picking up slimey little bits of gherkin off the floor). I was groped, threatened, and shouted at. And when you're cooking you get loads of little burns. It was horrid. And yes, I did smell of chips at the end of the day.

You get free food (to a certain value) and gorgeous polyester trousers though My advice would be take it if you have to and see how you like it - but keep looking for something else.

"You get free food (to a certain value) and gorgeous polyester trousers though"

Oh how can I resist

"So, MrsA ... why do you want to come and work for McDonalds"

"Well, you see... it was the polyester trousers that won me round"

Lol... hmmm... tempting. Full training/no experience necessary? Will go into town Wednesday and see if Vue or Odeon have application forms.

Need to check Tesco and Sainsburys too...

... need to make a list really

I only got one pair though - and when I was upset after a woman customer threatened to beat me up I forgot to put them in my locker - and someone pinched them - and the horrid tinpot dictator manageress shouted at me and said "they don't grown on trees you know" and well, no they don't, I know that, being polyester.

It was so traumatic - I think it was 10 years before I could go in MaccyDs again without either hyperventilating or starting to clear the tables.

Can you say "Have a nice day!" with a straight face? You'll be fine then.

GeorginaA · 03/07/2006 16:59

LOL marthamoo.

"Have a nice day" ... tee hee ... hmm.

karen - just tried to contact you via CAT but it says you're not set up to receive? Evenings after 6pm really - would only want max 10 hours in a week (preferably just one evening).

Georgina,

I haven't read all the suggestions so sorry if this is a duplicate but if I was going to work evenings/nights I would go for shelf shacking at 24 hours Asda as apparantly they pay up to £12 per hour for antisocial hours !!!

GeorginaA · 05/07/2006 14:15

Ta BabiesEverywhere - we haven't got an Asda in town unfortunately, but the other supermarkets may well have something similar - I'll check.

I asked the Sainsburys Delivery guy if there were any vacancies and he said there's almost always vacancies for order pickers on the internet shopping side of things - so will go check out them too.

Been talking it over with dh as well - and he'd like us to "wait and see" how this month goes (and whether he can get any new evening contracts - as a freelance web programmer he can get far more per hour than I would be able to, although he'd get taxed more heavily) before I commit myself. I think I'm still going to pop round places and get application forms though, so things can move more quickly at the end of the month if the bank balance is less than healthy.

Thanks for all the thoughts and advice, folks. It really has been very helpful (and thanks particularly to Karen for asking about vacancies at the Odeon on my behalf).

They also have a Family Contract, where you can pair up with another member of your family, then either person can do the shifts.

Skribble · 05/07/2006 23:53

McDonalds that was for family contracts

jasper · 06/07/2006 00:23

Have not read replies. I worked for McDonalds full time for a year a while ago.
There are incredibly flexible employers . You can request just about any hours you want.

Having been on the inside I get very defensive about them !
Their standards of food hygiene are second to none.

mears · 06/07/2006 00:45

Hi jasper

My DS works for McDonalds - very flexible with hours. He does 5 hour/ 6 hous and 8 hour shifts. Downside though is if shop is quiet you can get sent home therefore no pay. Only issues with one uniform which ia a pain 'cause I wash it!

Skribble · 06/07/2006 01:05

Supliment your uniform
