Hi everyone,

Just posting to see if anyone has any ideas what my lovely Russian friend could do as a job here in the UK.

She is a qualified Psychologist in Russia, and plans to do a conversion course here once her youngest goes to school - but she desperately needs something to do in the meantime as she is going stir-crazy at home !

I am thinking counselling ? But for who ?

Voluntary work is fine - her English isn't fabulous but improving all the time !

Please help as I haven't a clue in this area !

Thanks

we have employed a lot of uk psychology graduates in health care particularly in learning disability and mental health - to do clinical psychology in UK all experience as support workers/health care assistants is a bonus. Therefore would expect this to be the same to do the conversion course. It is very hard to get onto clinical psychology courses and can take many attempts - not sure if same for conversion but this may need some investigation.

i recently interviewed a polish psychologist for support worker post - same situation as you describe. on paper they would have been employed but unfortunatley they really had no understanding of what the job involved and therfore not successful. But with reasonable, understandable english and a good idea of what the job would entail (i.e. budget planning; hygiene; finding employment; household chores; dealing with verbal abuse etc etc) then I would have employed them.

from a voluntary work perspective hunt out mental health charities or mental health / learning disability befriending services. we cry out for people to befriend our clients who are in medium secure units (work like this could be a way into employed work within forensic psychology)

hope this is food for thought

Is she in london? this charity does amazing work with torture victims and use professional volunteers - her language may well be an advantage: Medical Foundation

Thanks you two - she's not in London unfortunately - North Hampshire. Certainly worth a further look though - I will pass this on to her ! I'd only come up with Samaritans and NCT (?) so this is great ! She just doesn't know where to start looking !

Ta very much x

She may need a work permit to work in the UK. This would be employee sponsored. It applies to volunteer work as well.
