Time off for job interview - I work term time so no holiday

So - interview mid-morning, noone at work knows I've got it, I work term-time so I can't just take the day off. Seems my only option is to ring in sick or pretend I've got another appointment I suppose. What do you think?

I work term-time too and d'you know I have no idea what I think. I am really uncomfortable about lying whether it was about sickness or some other appointment, but I can't think of an alternative.

Either you explain the situation to your new employer and see if they can accommodate you at some other time. They may like your upstandingness. Either that or you make a dental appointment for the same day so it's not a complete lie..

I know it depends on your working environment, but could you let someone know (a manager or supervisor) in confidence and then make the time up?

Tricky isn't it. Can't really make the interview any other time - I work Mon-Fri all day (well, you know what I mean). I do have some extra time built up to take but if I don't come in it still involves lying somehow - it's a case of finding the best lie unfortunately I think (the only people who need to know I'll be off are the ones I don't want to tell why at this stage).

I just pretended I had another appointment and hoped they didn't ask for references which would have meant I had got the job but also meant I would have been found out!

Just tell your manager that you need the morning off for personal reasons, and ask if you can take it as unpaid leave or make the time up, whichever is more convenient for them. You don't have to explain what it's for, and if you lie, you may get caught out.

My last employee who was going for an interview, called in with a flat tyre. I've been employing people for 25 years and accept that people change jobs.

I don't like lying either but I don't think you have an alternative.

I work in a school and we are allowed time off to attend interviews.

Have you checked your contract?
