Changing hours of work before signing contract?

I have recently been offered a nursing job it was advertised as full time, I mentioned at the interview that I would prefer part time as I have a young family. The interviewer said they would prefer me to work full time so I can consolidate my training at the same rate as other newly qualified nurses. As I was keen to impress and wanted the job I said ok. I was offered the job as accepted.

However as time draws closer to starting and discussing the issues with partner I realised I cannot be full time. The shifts are long 12.5 hours and I would not see my family. My son would have to be in nursery 8-6 everyday and I would hardly see both kids as when I ge back from work they are in bed. Plus the cost f childcare would mean the extra money we get is just paying for their childcare.

I want to work 30 hours due to childcare and to maintain family life. How would you suggest I negotiate this? Anyone with any experience of nhs that can help? I haven't signed contract yet as waiting for my qualification to be official.

I know that other nurses have started on part time contracts and it seems to be quite common to work part time for parents in nhs.

Should I email the nurse in charge of recruitment and ask or should I contact HR?

I'd appreciate any help in this matter, it's weighing on my mind a lot!

Well you can only ask. I would ask the nurse in charge of recruitment, assuming she is the one who will be managing you and making the decision.

In terms of how you negotiate, well unless they were struggling to recruit you're not in a great position, so it's a question of asking really.

If they say no, what will you do?

It's good to know your own bottom line before you start to negotiate.
