What do you do with your kids during the summer hols when you are both working?

Just trying to plan ahead really. If dh and I both got a job when we return, what would we do with dd and ds? What do other people do with their kids during the summer hols?

loads of stuff round here - kings sports run camps across the country - vg, mine have never done musicale but others rate them highly. in addition several different groups run weeks from the school mine go too so lots of choice there, as well as (for the older 2) scout camp for a fortnight. and split your hols - fortnight off together, then one takes a weeks hols, then the other, same for half terms - either send em eg skiiing with school, or one person takes off the feb half term, the other May, or take 2/3 days off each for those weeks.

Rent them out!!!! I just buy in extra childcare. Pain in the butt & usually costs me pain inducing amounts of money, but has to be done. I use my network of ex-nannies & childminders plus some holiday clubs, plus extra help from aupair.
I find it quite sweaty and spend the holidays vaguely fretting because I worry that someone will let me down or the kids will hate it - but at least with state schools it isn't for too long.

Pay the childminder more!

mosschops30 · 20/06/2006 11:27

holiday club for dd and the grandparents usually do a few days each too, dh will take a week and so will i normally.
ds is at cm as usual

fennel · 20/06/2006 11:29

holiday clubs can be good value. my 4 and 6 year old dds cost £11 a day each. and they enjoy it too.

Rhubarb · 20/06/2006 16:15

Forgot to say thanks for your input, will look into holiday clubs if we need to. Will they take ds though? He will be 2.5?

they have to be 4 or 5 usually for those clubs. but what will you be doing with Ds in term time? presumably childminder or nursery which would continue through the holidays?

Bozza · 20/06/2006 16:16

What will you be doing in termtime for childcare rhubarb? Especially for DS? I doubt holiday clubs will take him at that age TBH.

Tinker · 20/06/2006 16:17

Childminder for your son, too young for holiday schemes I think.

mousiemousie · 20/06/2006 16:21

Most people take some annual leave over the summer hols. I would normally have 2 or 3 weeks off - dp would have at least 2 weeks - the rest of the time we are lucky in that my parents have dd - but if not then holiday clubs are the usual solution or sharing some childcare with friends who work is also quite common.

Nursery when he is three, after the Christmas term.

Holiday club for three weeks, various relatives for three weeks.

Bozza · 21/06/2006 10:04

But nursery is only 2.5 hours a day. So what will you be doing the rest of the time?

Rhubarb · 21/06/2006 14:19

Childcare I guess!
