Am a regular, but changed my name for this as rl people will guess who I am under my usual mumsnet name!
I have been offered a place on a postgrad course which will enable me to qualify as a conservator.
I've wanted to do this for ages so am sooooooo excited!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The bit I am nervous about is the first 10 weeks which focuses pretty much exclusively on chemistry. The course is designed to enable people with NO chemistry backround to gain the knowledge required for the job.
I go from moments of "it will be fine" to complete panic as I last studied chemistry when I was 15 - didn't choose it as an O Level option as I went down the arts route (although I always did pretty well in the subject in end of year exams).
The course director said something like," we take you from understanding ions to cellulose at a lightening pace".
Dur - this means nothing to me Grin - can someone explain - ps he may not have said ions, it could have been something else Grin!

What are you going to be conserving?

GDG · 16/06/2006 21:41

Hmm, try not to worry too much. I did a degree in Physiology and Pharmacology for which I was supposed to have a B at A level chemistry - I hadn't even done GCSE chemistry but they let me do it due to my grades in the other subjects. I picked up what I needed with no problems.

Not sure if this helps even remotely and any chemistry knowledge I ever had has now vanished again Grin

The course specialises in paper conservation, so books, manuscripts etc, although people have moved on to MA's in fresco and oil painting conservation painting from it, so it seems to provide a solid background.

Ah so it will be all about the paper and stuff that destroys it
I would tell you about it but I'm afraid the partying of my twenties destroyed any knowledge gained from my Chemistry degree Blush

I can't be worse than Alevel Chem and from what I here these days that's dead easy

TheBlonde · 16/06/2006 21:48

It can't be worse

Thanks GDG - that is reassuring

lol TheBlonde Grin

There are a couple of books he recommended - I'll get my head stuck in them over the summer.

Cellulose can't be that complicated surely? Grin
