What should I look for in a Life Coach?

I'm thinking this could be a possibility to help focus my future.

What should I look out for and are their any qualifications I should expect?

I'm currently attending a life coaching workshop, it is not one-2-one, actually, there are 12 of us attending it. It's not rocket science, I have not been told nothing that I have not heard in the past or that I didn't know, I don't expect it will make my life change radically but, is definitvely helping me to focus again, so it's start.

I have friends who I talk about these things that ask questions and tell me what they think about what I said, but this little course has helped me to confront many issues, to ask the right questions to myself and to organise the way to do something about it.

So, IMO is worth it, but shop around until you find someone you trust. I really like my teacher but wouldn't use him for a one to one. There are so many things that I wouldn't discuss with a man, so... if I find a female life coach that I could recommend, I let you know! :)

Emmylou, Springboard is a womens development course. I was civil service and my manager paid for it (quite exp) as I have a major health problem and it was interferring with my work

It gave me the confidence to take redundancy (vol) and start my own business (which is a great success)

Thanks Katieb - but I am away from London - this lady has slightly older children & has been running her business for a while (I understand)

Chandra - I don't think I could have done the spring board thing (abot 18 of us) with a man - he would have so little understanding of my problems - I think it's great you enjoy it and find it useful - i loved my springboard course, that might be why I'm looking for another "push"

I don't know if life coaching 'works' and think there are probably a lot of rip off merchants out there. However I do know that my sister completely changed her life after undergoing her own life coach sessions, and is one of the happiest people I know.

I'll CAT you with her website, Katy.

Katymac - this is really interesting, i have been feeling a bit empty lately and reading this thread has got me thinking. would be interested to see what you think of life coaches. i have read a few books but it is so hard to put those into practice.

F&Z could i get the website as well please...

i work for a life coach. she tells me a lot about her work & thinks shes it, but she cant even manage her own life let alone anyone elses Shock yet people actually pay her to spout off cr@p to them that they could get out of a self help book.
from what i can gather the main emphasis is on positive thinking.
please dont waste any money on this load of old COBBLERS.

Katymac · 08/06/2006 20:45

Well Teacakes I'll let you know how I get on

I hope you are wrong Firestorm, but I'll let you know

I'm not looking for positive thinking atm - so if that's all it is, I will be disappointed

km, if I had an oustanding Ofsted, and a feasible business, I might seek to (1) advise others on how to improve their existing setups in a field which you obviously love and have great knowledge, experience, and personal flair or (2) replicate your achievements in a neighbouring area ! Expand !

Suzy Greaves is really brilliant
her company is called The Big Leap and she is amazing. Sorry, don't have a link, but google Big Leap and you'll get her.

take a piece of paper. write on it your problem, ie "i am useless" pour all your negative thoughts into it. then destroy said bit of paper (& negative thoughts with it) now write something positive on a new piece of paper, ie "i am a very worthwhile person" job done Smile
you just got a freebie there. thats really all it is, positive thinking.

I interviewed loads of lifecoaches for a tv programme once, and thought that, while I did meet a couple of charistmatic and interesting people, the majority of it was a kind of pyramid selling scheme for the middle classes, who were all coaching each other and paying each other for the priviledge.

But - and tell me if I am wrong here - it may not be the right thing for you. Life coaching seems to me to work best with people who are 'stuck' - who want to go and do something different but lack the confidence or the knowledge of how to get there (90% of life coaching seems to be about breaking tasks down into small, manageable steps and then telling you to do them).

But you seem to be in potentially a much more interesting position (and to tell the truth, one that I am rather envious of). You have money coming in, a world of opportunity, but nothing is particularly grabbing you at the moment. For what it's worth, my free life coaching advice would be a) take some time off, because you will not know what you want until you get off the treadmill and b) play - have a go at all sorts of fun things, perhaps do some volunteering around stuff that interests you, but don't feel that any decision you take has to be the absolute one. Then you will at some point find something that really engages you and you can get on with it.

What also might be good are the kind of courses which are about finding out what you really want to do - a friend of mine did Passport, which is a weekend thing. I know there are others - perhaps someone else knows them?

twocats - I have been having time off (in theory) unfortunatley I am unable to "let go" of my current business - if I wasn't here (ie somewhere else) I couldn't keep such a tight hold

It's very interesting what you say tho' and I do appreciate I am in a very lovely position
