Hi im looking for a bit of advice for a friend. The last six months she has been suffering from abdominal pain which comes in waves, along with this she has been experiencing fatigue, nausea and swelling of the abdomen. She has had various scans, urine and blood tests over the last six months but the doctors have found it difficult to diagnose anything and the only thing that they think it could be although they havent confirmed it yet is her kidney is in the wrong position (she's waiting for ct scan results to confirm)
Ok so the problem is she's struggling at work. She has not had any time off sick with the illness as she says that she feels fine most of the time but then can start to feel unwell during the day. Her job involves standing alot and sometimes she feels pulling pains in her stomach. She gets tired very quickly and by the time she gets home some nights she looks like all her energy has been drained out of her.
Is there anything her employer can do to help her or does she need to wait for a diagnosis first?

Thanks for the advice champagne
As far as I know she hasn't spoken to her manager about it. Her manager knows that she's has been having health problems as she has had a lot of hospital/doctors appointments in work time but I don't think she knows what's wrong.

whilst Champagne is not wrong as in most managers are scared by doctors notes, they are not a get out of jail free card, they only ensure the employers gets ssp, they don't actually mean you need to be off sick, it does help I have to say since they changed them to note adjustment, it sound like she needs to see a Occupational Health Professional either nurse or doctor, as this has been long term and she has been struggling.
even if the employer does not have OH provision they can access it very easily from an independent practitioner or large company at a reasonable cost compared to the cost of someone being off sick.

for the record I work in OH but I do not work independently or for a private company. I just believe in OH :)
