How long is your commute?

Just that really! My current commute to work is 1hr 40 minutes each way. I am getting more and more worried about how that's going to work once I have my baby in terms of childcare etc. So, do any of you do a long commute? Any tips? Do you think it's do-able?

Thanks in advance!

My commute is 1 hour 15 mins each way. I only work 3 days a week (I do compressed hours - so do 3.5 days in 3 to make the most of having travelled in). DH works close to home and the nursery so it is fine.

On my working days, DH does nursery drop offs and pick ups including of DD is poorly and needs collecting early.

It means I don't see a lot of DD on those days, but it works for us. (And the train journey is nice for some quiet time to read etc)

Good luck.

I work full time, 1.5 hour commute, since DS was a baby, I relied on my mum a lot, as the nursery was only 8-6, now he's at school, I still rely on my mum a lot!

Thanks, Fidget and NoRain. It's good to know that some people do do it, and it's made me realise that perhaps I will need to look into different ways of doing things eg. working from home or reducing my hours in order to make it work.

Thanks again!

Mine is about 15mins when I manage to get a lift or 45 mins on public transport.

About 75 minutes if I train+cycle. 55 minutes if I drive. Each way.

Hi, mine is about 1.5hrs each way. I do 3 days a week and I would say you really need a H who is closer to home, or help.

Whilst my children were at nursery, it was pretty straightforward - DH would do drop off (just after 8am) and still get to work to 8.30ish. I moved my work day from 9-5pm to (officially) 8.30-4pm with a shortened lunch hour (although I do 7.45am-4pm with sandwich at my desk!) so would leave at 4pm and would collect at 5.30pm. So far so good.

Then they started school - OMG how short is the school day?!! 8.50-3pm in our case. Most schools have breakfast club and after school clubs but even though my children did quite long days at nursery, they were just shattered at school and so we decided that breakfast club / after school wasn't ideal for 3 days.

So, DH still drops off, but doesn't get to work now until about 9.30am. He also finishes early one day so he can collect at 3pm so they don't have to go to after school that day (I work past 4pm that day, get back about 9pm). As a result, even though he sometimes worked long days before, he now always does Mon-Thurs - gets home for 8pm and often goes in early too on the days I'm at home. Its just a question of juggling and adapting your hours (if possible) / accepting that you'll have to work at home / long hours etc to find a solution that works for your family. Good luck - its hard work Smile!
