Sick note confidentiality

My boss has asked me to post my sick note to a colleague (same level as me, not a manager). I'm not sure why, I think it's because boss working away from the office a lot.

I'm unhappy to do this as my sick note is confidential - and whilst I'm happy for my boss and staff in other departments like HR to see it, I don't want my colleague to see it. My boss is obliged to keep it confidential but my colleague isn't.

What are the rules WRT sick note confidentiality in this situation?

I dont actually know but I wouldn't be happy with that!

Put the line in a sealed envelope marked for the attention of your boss and add in a short cover letter and address that to the colleague? She will receive it but it will still be sealed for your boss. Or get the doctor to write something vague?

Why can't you post it to the company address marked for his attention or directly to the person who inputs payroll?

Maybe your boss is away and the colleague is helping out with admin duties?

If you don't feel comfortable then call your boss and speak to them.

Are you on long time sick, how did your boss request you send it to the colleague?

Or if you have an hr post direct to them? Or his out of office address?

I have been signed off for a couple of weeks with hyperemesis but I don't want the whole office to know I'm pregnant yet.

My GP has already written my note, and I asked my boss for address to send it to. I should add that my work place is a new organisation as of 1st April (ex-NHS) - everything is v disorganised at the moment, new boss and I'm not sure of correct procedure for this. I've no idea where HR or payroll are located.

Boss is in work, but out of the office for about 4 days a week in meetings and stuff. I've been communicating with my boss via email as she requested and I have access to my work emails from home. Boss doesn't have an office or even a desk - it's all hot desks. So there would be no where to leave mail for her.

Colleague doesn't work in admin capacity normally, she does the same job as me.

I think I'm going to email boss and say I'm not happy to send it to colleague. But am worried I'm creating a fuss!

You will find a number to call at least for payroll and HR to get the correct address to send it to.

Can you get to a scanner and scan to your boss' email?

Firstly your colleague would be just as obliged to keep it confidential as your boss would.

However I understand why you're not happy - I wouldn't be either. I think Brian's plan of scanning it in and emailing it is a good one. If you have an iPhone or iPad you can download scanner apps.

Email your boss saying you will scan to him and send the original to hr/payroll etc

Should be fine to do that.
