Requesting copies of a reference

If you are offered and accept a job subject to 'satisfactory references' being obtained and you are later dismissed on the basis of that reference who do you request a copy from, the employer who wrote the reference or the new organisation?

Thank you.

I'd ask both. In terms of who you should officially ask, you could make a subject access request under the Data Protection Act and would make that request to the new employer.

But I would also contact the old employer and ask them as well. Do you have any idea of what they might have said? Any issues you were aware of?

There were issues (it's not for me, it's for an ex colleague) but I understand that the issues were discussed at interview and the job was offered but since starting in the new post the offer has been withdrawn.

We have to ask permission from the new employee before requesting references and I would have no issue in passing the body of the reference on to an employee.

We only give x worked here between this and this date references unless there really was a concern.

I was recently asked for a reference for a shocking ex member of staff and simply replied back saying the employee didn't meet our high expectations and was let go within the probationary period, I didn't go in to detail of why.

I requested mine from the new employer. Expected a fight to get them. Got them no problem.

The fact that I requested my interview sheet and got it, with the only other candidates name blackened out really got me thinking about confidentiality. I was able to tell everything they thought of her too.
