Resigning

If I were to leave work today and simply not go back, what would happen?

I'm finished for the day, so I I were to simply ring in the morning and say that's it, I'm not coming back?

Do you need a reference from your employer either now or in the future? Theoretically, your employer could sue you for failing to give notice although unless you are central to the operation of the company they are unlikely to do so. How long is your notice period? Would it really be so awful to resign properly by giving a month's (or whatever period) of notice?

QueenOfCats · 11/06/2013 12:59

My notice period is 2 months. I'm only part time so not an important member of staff.

I'm so fed up of the place that really all I want to do is get out of there.

Good point re reference though. Thanks

Honestly, if I was you I would resign and try to negotiate your notice down to one month. If you are really determined to leave you will probably find that you feel much happier once you have an end date in sight, even if it does end up being two months off.

What annh said. Technically you would be in breach of contract although realistically in most cases it's not worth the employer's while pursuing that line.

But if you ever might need a reference at any point it would not be at all sensible.

Two months is quite long, so unless you're really key there's a good chance they'd be happy to let you go sooner. And as annh said, psychologically, resigning it itself goes a long way towards making you feel better even if you can't leave immediately.

QueenOfCats · 11/06/2013 13:39

Thanks both - your absolutely right - I can't possibly just walk out.

Didn't realise I may be able to negotiate leaving sooner, that gives me some hope.

Im just so unhappy.

I feel really out of place, nobody speaks to me much, it's like being at scho.

I walked out of my job last week, long and boring story.
No job to go to.
Though I feel like a great weight is off my shoulders I am also a bit ashamed that I was so unprofessional.
Give your notice and try to get it down to a month.

Posted too soon.
I also felt like I was at school and didn't fit in. I don't miss it.

If you give your reasons why you are resigning and tell them how unhappy you are HR may well agree to letting you go sooner.

Are you owed any holiday that you could take in your notice period plus seeing if you can get it shortened?
