What is the key to a 'killer' Supporting Statement for a job application?

Hi

I am applying for a senior role. They are asking for a 2 sides of A4 Supporting Statement to accompany my CV and no horrible application form which is good!.

It is a while since I applied for a job as I am freelancing currently, I was approached about this role and it is a bit 'dream job' ish so I am applying.

Have had a bit of a Google, and have come up with this format. Have I missed anything? Any thoughts on what else I could/should add? The role is marketing.

About me - opening para about me & my situation (eg wanting to move into an employed role)

Why I want to work for X (so demonstrating my understanding of their org & market)

Why I want to be the z for x (ie why I am attracted to the role)

Why I am the right person for the job (reflecting on my experience & interest in them)

Main areas of responsibility (so taking the key areas/responsibility from the spec and providing an outline of my experience under each one)

Final para - hope I am suitable and taken to the next stage

TIA

katatonic has good advice.

Can you add in anything which outlines exactly what your contribution will be, ie talk in the future tense not just about your past achievements? 'My experience doing X for nameless client in your target market has provided me with good contacts which I will be able to use to help [name of company] achieve its objectives' or 'My experience as a freelancer shows that I will be able to work on my own and can make decisions' - I'm sure you can write it better than that but you get the idea. Spell out what you will do for them. Good luck.

Hi both

Thanks for your thoughts, some good points. Have done a first draft so will review with your feedback in mind.

Will let you know if I get anywhere!

Agree - say what you can do for them and why they should pick you. I've just been shortlisted for a job, and in the application I spelled out how I would approach the job, what my strategy would be, and how my experience would help me to do this. Show them what you can do for them, rather than why you want the job.

Thanks. Further good points.

I have been invited to a first interview, which I am really pleased about!

However all these points will help with my prep for the interview.
