What happens when you complain about an employees aggressive behaviour and bad language.

I have made a formal complaint to my boss today against another employee who used aggressive behaviour towards me earlier in the week including an horrendous amount of swearing. There were 2 witnesses.

It was so bad I was unable to respond and removed myself from the situation to a different part of the office.

Said employee read an email I had written to our line manager saying that employee may be in trouble and that the bosses were involved. He went ballistic hence his behaviour and my actions. I personally feel he thinks I have reported him for something - I didn't do this. I verified questions I was asked but I did not report said employee.

I am actually quite scared, emotional and worried. I hope I have given enough to go on. I don't want to out myself.

If you've made a complaint formally then it is likely to be treated by your employer as a grievance. Did they mention the grievance procedure at all?

I am sure there is one. I will need to look it up. Am I being ridiculous and sensitive or is it the right thing to do.

I have just had a grievance like this upheld against an employee the same level as me.

We both attended an investigation meeting with HR seperatley and then witnesses were interviewed and then the outcome decided.

not entirely satisfied with the outcome and have now asked to take it further as Being forced to work in a small team with him is causing me anxiety.

would ask your manager for a copy of the grievance policy and say that you want it to be considered a grievance.

Also. Keep copies of any emails related to the complaint in a desperate folder as I have found this very useful as this has gone on

Definitely the right thing to do (I work in HR)

What are your expectations from here? What do you want to happen was said employee?

Think about that.

Resolution isn't always easy - depending upon the severity of the employees actions, he may only receive a warning, rather than dismissal. This very much depends on the altercation, witnesses and how good the the initial investigation is (and how good management are at dealing with it quickly)

Was the employee suspended after the incident? What happened straight after?

Straight after he demanded to see the boss. Boss listened to him and then apparently told him to put his side in writing for it to be investigated. Boss wasn't there at the time. Came in shortly after.

Management are notoriously slow.

I don't know what I want to happen. I just want to sleep at the moment.

That doesn't sound positive notyomamma. I hope you get matters resolved.

We don't have an HR department.

If he's going off on one about an email that details previous issues then he actually has some serious anger issues.

I would speak to your line manager as a matter of urgency tomorrow morning and explain that you wish for your letter of complaint to be treated like a grievance and to limit the damage, the investigations should be undertaken immediately; that this wasn't some petty disagreement or argument, it was inappropriate behaviour and unprofessional conduct in the workplace.

If I was in your situation I would be wanting to be able to go to work and not feel abused, shouted or sworn at. If this person cannot control their behaviour or change their attitude or behaviour in the work place then they should be dismissed (this is the kind of resolution that any good manager will come to)

Hope this helps. You've done the right thing - it is up to management to deal with this. If they need a HR consultant to deal with it PM me Grin this is the kind of thing I get contracted in to sort out!
