I wanted to ask you Work From Home mumsnetters what the going rate was for editorial / research / proofing, if you have any idea? I have been asked to help on a commercial project, creating a new publication & wanted to get some idea of numbers. In the past I have charged £25 ph for small scale translation projects, which would generally be 5-10 hours' worth of work. Any ideas?

yes and I did start a thread recently saying that I would never go back to work< >but this might not come off

I was recently paid 20/hour for editing. (academic paper- commercial rates might be more).
If you ever fancy setting up a work from home agency type thingy give us a shout. Am pondering doing this :)

thanks jimjams & watch those threads!!

the £25 ph was for academic translation

the publisher wants to offer a % comm for any ads placed & subs generated while researching / writing up the project, but don't want to work for free - what's the point?

I do freelance proofreading and editing for an online agency called www.wordsru.com. The pay is rubbish, ranging from 7-13 australian dollars per 1,000 words, but it is very convenient to do from home. I reckon that works out at about GBP10/hr for me, which is nothing like the rates suggested above, but on the other hand there is no risk for me as they find the work and take the fall if it all goes wrong.
I am an engineering grad and my pal (a biologist) also did this when her kids were smaller.

Yes I just spoke to a friend who commissions proof readers and he says that pay is from £4.50 (less than min.wage per hour here) to £8.50 per 1000 words, which is for substantial editing etc. So the quicker you are, the better you get paid & onus is on you to finish quickly ... !
