Want to change working hours. How do I approach this?

I currently work 28 hours a week. 4 full days. When DS starts school later in the year I want to ask to do my hours over 5 days meaning 4 days are school hours and one day is 9-5.

I want to ask for a mobile that accepts e-mail so I can keep on top of things while away.

How do I approach this? Do I just write a letter? Is this classed as flexible working?

On my current day off an as and when we require you girl covers my job (no contract or anything).

This is classed as flexible working.www.acas.org.uk/media/pdf/0/l/Right-to-apply-for-flexible-working-a-short-guide-accessible-version-June-2011.pdf should help with how to approach your request.

Yes this would be a flexible working request, so you need to follow the appropriate procedure. If you think your job would then be manageable without need for the casual worker, that would be something to put in as a business reason for the company to agree it, ie money saving.

Thank you both. This is helpful. Yes, it will save them money. Although I will ask for a phone this will still be cheaper than the mileage and salary they pay the casual lady who covers for me.

I successfully went from 5 days to 3 days and different hours.

I put a case forward of what I wanted to do, why I wanted to do it, what the benefits would be (to the company) and how any problem that might arise from my change of hours would be dealt with.
