erm it's the minimum hourly rate x the number of hours you work, then they deduct tax and national insurance (i.e. it's the minimum gross rate, not net)

dunno if that's what you are after

erm no! Grin

im looking for a job at least £6.50 per hour so how does the national minimum wage come up to £6.50 ph... do i send in proof to the jobcentre after i got the job to prove of how much i need to live on?

i guess it would only come up to £6.50 per hour if you get tax credits in addition to the national minimum wage?

biglips · 03/05/2006 09:54

can i find that out for sure before i get a minimum wage job or not?

yes, you can find out in advance - maybe if you speak to a job centre adviser they could work it all out for you - i.e. as to what you would be entitled to in tax credits

tax credits would be based on your earnings and dp's. There are calculators online that you can use to work out what you are possibly entitled to - they're not always 100% though. We applied for Housing Benefit based on the results of one, and were turned down, but the tax credit part of it was more accurate iirc.

I'll see if I can find it and do a link.

Hi, NMW is paid at different rates dep on age - think it's £5.05 for age 21+, going up to £5.35 in Oct (sure someone will correct me if that's wrong). An employer can pay you the age 18-21 rate whilst "training" if the training is something like NVQ and they can prove they're sending you for training. Think they only do that for 6 mths max, or whilst on "probation". Don't think many employers know about that one luckily!!
