Paid holidays / sickdays on temporary contract???

Have been on a temporary contract where I am now for 5 months. Looks like the lady I'm standing in for isn't coming back, so now want to approach boss for a change in contract as atm if I don't work I don't get paid.

I love the work there, close to home, no stress and nice bosses who are very flexible when i need time to look after kids or if nanny is sick (obviously as they don't pay me when I don't work they don't mind too much Wink :)

Anyhow thought at the 6 months mark I might approach boss for change in contract to include paid holiday and hopefully sick leave.

Anybody know what my entitlements are? Obviously I DOn't want to piss them off Grin

Thank you

hmm - a lot depends on what you are doing and how you are paid but I think you are legally entitled to holiday pay now even on your current contract.

(In the business I'm in they've very much clamped down on this, and now all of our contracts have to include holiday at least).

You probably need to go to the CAB or something and show them your current contract, so they can tell you what you're entitled to or not.

in which case it sounds a lot like our working practices, and I think you're legally entitled to holiday pay on a pro rata basis. Our contracts have to include this, even if they're for four weeks. This is quite a recent development - last few years or so - and there has been a crackdown, which I think is to do with EU law and rights for part-timers.

Definitely worth finding an expert to advise you on this - or perhaps there'll be an employment lawyer along soon!

You're entitled to paid holiday on a pro-rata basis, you would be entitled to paid sick leave if someone doing approximately the same job on a permanent basis is entitled to sick leave. Temporary employees have rights to the same contractual terms as permanent employees doing the same job (over-simplifying a bit but it's way too complicated to go into here!)

The DTI website is a very good source of information for what your rights are.

thanks all ... as for employees doing the same job... I'm the only PA Grin there's only 4 people all together in the office. 2 Directors, 1 clerk and myself. And a part time accountant :)
