Taking voluntary redundancy when have good PT job

Hi,

I've been offered to take voluntary redundancy with the appropriate pay off for my 12 years service. I don't love the job but haven't looked for a new one for some years as on maternity leave etc.

In ordinary circumstances I wouldn't even consider it but after my second child I feel that I want to have a more inspiring career.

Am I being ungrateful for my PT, working from home job or should I aim higher?

And think of the children? I don't think I could do a full on, full time job while they are toddlers.

Does any one have any advice? I'm totally confused.

I'd hang on in there for as long as you can. Jobs like yours are rarer than hens teeth!

I realise it would be hard to find a new job but would I regret not taking this opportunity to spend a bit of time with the children while they are young and delightful! The office won't thank me whenever I decide to quit, now or in 30 years time (god forbid!)

Agree with Tread - part-time, working from home, jobs are as rare as hens teeth in the real world. They are the sort of thing you "earn" after many years' loyal service and not something you will find easily.

On the other hand, you have been offered voluntary redundancy with an "appropriate pay-off". Is the pay-off higher than the statutory minimum amount? If so, it may be worth considering, particularly if the chances are that compulsory redundancies will follow and on worse terms (in which case, presumably, part-time roles would be very vulnerable).

It's at least a years FT salary so could keep me going for ages, especially if I wasn't paying for childcare. I guess my main reservation is being able to get (and cope with) work when i get to the point where the children are at school and also how I would manage pick ups and drop offs etc. I know other people manage, I'm just not sure if I want the stress.
