Am going to apply for a p/t LSA post at my dd1s school.I know I can do the job but it's been 6 1/2yrs since I worked so the old confidence has taken a severe battering. Have been a volunteer at the school foe the last 18ms but don't have any paid school experience. Ant tips on the ap'n form/interview/job etc gratefuly received, that is if I get an interview???

I was an LSA back in 1997. My interview focused on why I wanted to do the job, what I thought I could bring to it, & my experience with children (my own). If you've been doing voluntary work at the school, there's your experience. Think about what you do as a volunteer & how that will directly help you in carrying out your new job so that you can quote specific examples if they ask. (Like taking direction from the teacher, and relating to specific children). You should be able to come up with quite a few. Good Luck!!

If you haven't done any training, the school will probably want you to do some once appointed. It might be worth finding out where you can do an appropriate course locally, when the courses are running, and that sort of thing.

Good Luck!

I started voluntary at my ds school and applied for an LSA job. I got it and I have been there now for 4 years. I hadn't worked for 8 years. I was interviewed by 2 governers and the head - scary. They asked questions concerning health and safety issues, common sense things really, like not putting things on high shelves so the child won't pull them on his head, keep classroom floors dry so no one slips, keep scissors etc.out of reach.
They asked why I thought I would be good at the job and I just said how I found it really easy to communicate with the children and I had a good relationship with them. I think if you do voluntary they have a good idea of how you are anyway. I had done a short college course, but since I have been there the school has put me and all the other LSAs on courses anyway.
I really love the job and it really fits in with having kids. Good luck and let us know how you get on.

what is LSA please?
Always interested in things you can do after years out with the kids and fit the kids rounds too.

Suzywong, LSA is learning support assistant or classroom assistant. We are actually called TAs where I work, or teaching assistants.

Didn't even get an interview

Apparently they had lots of applicants and have appointed someone with no connections to the school. Which makes me wonder why they put it in the school news letter! Anyway, it obviously wasn't meant to be......ho hum.
