Are they taking the mick? Aren't Good Friday and Easter Monday public holidays?

I've just gone back to work. They say I can have Monday off but not Good Friday. (I'm on a 6 month contract).
Is Friday a public holiday? And does that mean I can ask for a day off in lieu? Or extra money?

hunkermunker · 11/04/2006 15:44

Where do you work?

Think you work in a similar industry to me.

We have to work Christmas Day.

Do you get unsoc hours allowance?

expatinscotland · 11/04/2006 15:44

Nope. Easter Monday is not an 'Edinburgh' holiday, so the council and most businesses will be open.

spidermama · 11/04/2006 15:49

I don't know many salary details yet as they haven't troubled themselves to send me a contract despite my having chased it up. Angry I wonder if that means I won't be paid at the end of this month. Eeek! I'd better get onto that.

If you're on fixed hours and your colleagues work shifts, you're definitely not guaranteed to get Bank Holidays off. It's one reason I went back to work on a Sunday rather than a Saturday, so I didn't miss DS1's first Christmas Day (still worked Boxing Day though!).

Freckle · 11/04/2006 19:35

Quite apart from the fact that I don't think that GF is a Bank holiday, you are not automatically entitled to bank holidays unless it is specifically mentioned in your contract. If you take off bank holidays, it can be deducted from your annual holiday entitlement. Not many people know that......

Marina · 11/04/2006 19:36

Dsis works in radio production and regularly has to work nights/weekends/holidays, but it is rostered in advance and with some element of consultation...and her overall t & c reflect this requirement, with a salary enhancement and extra TOIL. :( Sounds like they dumped on the newby spidermama....

Janh · 11/04/2006 19:37

GF is a BH.

LadySherlockofLGJ · 11/04/2006 19:38

Grin JanH the ultimate in acronym's.

Gillian76 · 11/04/2006 19:38

I think it would have to be detailed in your contract without it being an automatic entitlement.

SaintGeorge · 11/04/2006 19:39

Watch it with this talk of 'GF is a BH', you'll all get sued Wink

hunkermunker · 11/04/2006 19:40

(Think we should be writing Good Friday in full, or else people will be putting Big Heifer to your second abbreviation, possibly and allegedly, JanH Wink)

Just to clarify (and we are likely to have a similar set-up, SM) - I do get Bank Holidays (albeit pro-rata since being part-time), but they're in my annual leave total, not the specific days. Which is nice, sometimes.

hunkermunker · 11/04/2006 19:41

Balls, in the time it took me to post that, LGJ and SG had beaten me to it, making me look like I'd copied...!

chipmonkey · 11/04/2006 19:41

JanH be careful. GH will sue MN if you call her a BH!

chipmonkey · 11/04/2006 19:41

GF I mean!

hunkermunker · 11/04/2006 19:42

Blimey, look what you started, JH Grin

Janh · 11/04/2006 19:42

ROFL, LGJ Grin

(Sorry, MN, I really didn't see how that would look - I bet the lawyers will be on to me like a shot Grin)

JanH

Can you just pop over here and answer a few questions please ??

What are you feelings towards my client ??

Do you know her? Are you in a position to pass comment ??

With regard to the big heifer comment , we are prepared to let that one stay on the file for now, we will not press charges. We have seen photos and she is a tad rotund. Grin

DumbledoresGirl · 11/04/2006 20:07

Dh works in the engineering industry and he has never had Good Friday off unless he has taken it as part of his holiday allowance. The reason for this is there is a tradition of engineering firms, mainly based in the Midlands but it has spread beyond that, not having Good Friday off but having Easter Tuesday off instead.

So this year, he has Easter Tuesday off and our children go back to school on that day!
