I've just admitted it on the what's your maternity leave deal like thread, and it's rankling.

My secretary and I crept into the office of my boss and discovered that the locum solicitor he has hired while I'm off is going to earn twice as much as I do Shock and he only does half the work I do because he doesn't specialise in the areas I do Shock.

Trouble is, I can hardly go in crying not fair can I, because I sneaked.

Bummer.

Isn't this normal for people who come in on short-term, possibly freelance contracts?

Carmenere · 05/04/2006 12:10

Oh God I left a job because I found out the assistant manager was getting more than me, they said I shouldn't have been looking at the wages fax - it came into the kitchen ffs, and I was the manager ffs.
Not much you can do in your situation though SadAngry for you.

agree with Blu. Locums always get paid more because they are available iyswim

Carmenere · 05/04/2006 12:12

Yes agree about locum thing, but twice as much and not as skilled is galling.

allyco · 05/04/2006 12:24

yep I know. They do get more don't they. Maybe I should be one Grin.

But I am BETTER than him.

Still wish I hadn't looked though. My secretary led me astray. I was shocked. She was flabbergasted!

When I looked at legal contract work, I was told by the recruitment agent that locums tend to get more because of the instability but also because it is to compensate them for the lack of pension. But getting twice more seems a bit excessive. I would say collect your maternity pay from your company but look into locum-ing at the same time. With your skills, you could be much better off.
