My lovely cousin who has had a Cr*p life in many ways (abusive 1st husband, much loved 2nd husband died of leukaemia) has rebuilt her life and works as a doctors receptionist. She has been there 2 yrs plus and I would imagine is great at her job and she loves it. Just before christmas she was sent home for the day because her blood pressure was so high, they thought she was about to have a stroke. There was no history of previous problems. Her own GP has signed her off for a week while the problem is investigated. Today the practice nurse phoned her to let her know that the senior doctor was thinking of firing her because "I have high blood pressure and I come into work so why cant she". In over 2 yrs and with 4 children, she has had one day off work sick-I cant believe this. She phoned me tonight and was crying because she was upset at the thought of losing her job and also feels so unappreciated. I told her I was sure this would not be legal but I would check it out for her. Anyone know the specific regulations? Presumably the NHS has the same employer guidelines as everyone else? This particular GP sounds like a complete idiot and she spends much of her time fending off complaints from dissatisfied patients, I told her to just point them in his direction next time-pig!

Hi - this sounds totally illegal. I suggest looking at www.acas.co.uk Hope this helps

My immediate thought is not about the legitimacy of her alleged proposed firing but the reliability of the source. (the practice nurse) . Perhaps the senior doctor made an off the cuff remark which was overheard by the nurse, taken slightly out of context and passed onto your cousin?
There is even the possibility the nurse is stirring it.I am assuming the nurse is not actually her employer.
If she was "sent home" because her BP was high that shows a degree of care by her employer.
I hope your cousin is feeling better and can return to work soon.

Am sure if her GP has signed her off sick, they can't fire her for it
Perhaps a call to Unison?
