I just need a big old whinge!

I am so fed up with my job. I just feel like I work work work and the career progression / salary rises aren't happening. I'm fed up and contemplating looking fro a new job.

So, come on. Misery loves company. Anyone else feel the same way? Do you hate your job? Is your boss neglecting your career progression needs?

I work in the oil and gas industry (moslt we build offshore platforms). I used to be a mechanical engineer. But jumped ship about 7 years ago for IT. I think if I left the company I'd like to do Project Management. Anyone elses work in this business? What credentials do you need. I don't really have any technical IT skills. Will this be an obstacle?

PMBOK is the Project Management Body of Knowledge, an American version of PRINCE. You can get an American qualification in it - Certification of Project Management Professionals from the Project Management Institute.

It's all well beyond the knowledge or understanding of projects in this company, where they are still struggling with the concept of Customer as a separate entity from the Sponsor.

However the larger multinational investment banks all have more advanced project management techniques and will appreciate a qualification in PM.

Oh sorry Uwila that things have turned again. Here is a \link{http://www.recruitmentzone.com/vacancies.php?id=RZ010261#top_of_job\current vacancy} from the agency that BP use so it might be a local job. I know it's a PM role - but you could always give them a ring to find out what PM methodology they are looking for. Not sure if the skills match yours but they seem to be very downstream specific. You never know if they don't have a candidate with PM skills they might prefer someone with the right skills to train up. There's no harm in giving them a call to explain your current situation.

Just caught up with this thread. I've been a PM at confectioner and have just taken redundancy as they're 're-organising' and offered good monetary incentive. I took it as an opportunity to spend a few more months with 18 wk daughter and to leave a job I didn't like; i need a change but have no clue. Luckily I've got some time now to do CV and soulsearch. but i do have to go back to work, like most, in order to help with the mortgage.

Interested in Prince II discission - I don't have it but have been a PM for 2 years, should I seriosly consider this or can I sell myself based on experience alone? I'd like to find another PM role as it's so versatile. Am up North where such roles may be too few so must be competitive.

Uwila, sorry to go off subject, you mentioned you were thinking of dual citizenship - are your parents British? I'm American married to Brit and am perm res but thought I couldn't become full UK citiz unless I gave up my US citizenship - my parents aren't British. Pls let me know if you think otherwise, thanks. I know there is something called 'naturalisation' , but haven't yet taken that route.

Uwila · 26/04/2006 08:37

Hi Ohio, I am American, as are my parents, and their parents, and their parents, and so on... My husband is British. And, yes, this makes me eligible for UK citizenship. The question about having to give up US citizenship is a bit of a grey area. Technically, if you pledge allegiance to another country the US can snatch your citizenship. However, there was a supreme court ruling not too long ago that deemed something like if you did intend to give up your US citienship it could not be automatically taken from you. I do wish to pursue UK citizenship but most certainly not at the expense of my US citizenship.

Thanks Uwila. Good luck on the job hunt and hope to see good news from you on this forum.

I just want to give an update to my little (okay big) moan here.

I managed to get my boss to pay for the Prince2 foundation (and passed it) a month ago. And today, he told me that he has approved the "promotion" that he agreed with me when I transferred to his department TWO YEARS AGO.

Finally, my efforts are paying off. It's small steps I suppose as he still owes me Prince2 Practioner. But, hey, some progress is better than none.
