If I give my notice in and they ask me to leave before it's up, do they still have to pay me?

That's it really

I am seriously unhappy at work and just have to get out but of course I can't afford to just give it up. I'm on 12 weeks' notice and they're well known here for telling people to go virtually straight away when they hand their notice in. Which would be fine by me...

If they did this, would they still have to pay me for 12 weeks?

Yes, they would - also any contractual entitlements (car / childcare vouchers etc) for the notice period.

Yes they would have to pay you.

Is there no way to speak to your manager about what's bothering you?

Wow, thanks so much both for your quick replies

Wrongmore... nice idea but I'm afraid it's gone way beyond that unfortunately

They would have to pay you, yes, but you wouldn't necessarily get contractual benefits as well. Check your contract to see if there is a pay in lieu of notice clause in it. If so that would normally be salary only. If they put you on garden leave instead rather than terminate immediately, you would get all your benefits.
