Best way to leave a company when you're planning to go and do freelance consultancy?

Hurrah! Those of you who read of my situation on another thread will know that I was in a redundancy position, although I'd already decided to leave anyway to set up my own consultancy.

Anyway, it's all final and hopefully I should be out in a few weeks with a very significant lump sum to see me on my way Grin

Just wondered if anyone who's freelance had any top tips for me as to how best to 'play things' as I exit the company?

Should I mail everyone and anyone with my new business contact details?
Have a series of one-to-one chats?
Wander round handing out my business cards?
Obviously, ensure all my contacts are up to speed....

Not if your consultancy is in the same business as your employer. If they think you might be trying to entice away their customers, you could lose your redundancy and find yourself sacked.

Is there someone you could ask (assuming it is not a competign business), e.g. HR people who are handling the redundancy?

No - I wouldn't be competing for business, but I would hopefully be able to come back to the company and do consultancy type work for some of the teams here.

I guess I was just wondering what people (in the company) would feel 'acceptable levels of self promotion' before I left?
