Does anyone know if you work part-time Monday to Thursday and normally get Friday off ... are you entitled to a day in lieu for Good Friday bank holiday?

Normally (civil servcie) you get 4/5th of any bank holiday

I think the short answer is no. The long answer is that employers seem to do this differently. For example I work Mon-Thurs and I get all bank holidays that fall on my workdays, but not ones that don't. Dh also works part time, but his employer gives him bank holidays pro-rata, regardless of whether they fall on his work days. So he has 80% of bank holidays added to his holiday allowance, but then must use that to take bank holidays that fall on his work days.

Thanks .. didnt think that I would get away with that one! Still at least there is only one bank holiday Friday - I'm glad I don't work Tuesday to Friday ... I would miss out on all the bank holiday Mondays!!

As far as i know, it should be as elliot's husband. Otherwise you are at a detriment for working part-time. I work tues to fri (civil service)and so i get 4/5ths of the bank holiday entitlement added to my annual leave. So for most bank hols i am off anyway (as you are on good friday)but i get those days anyway (pro-rata)to take when i like. When bank hols are on a friday or at christmas i have to use on of my bankholiday/annual leave days. You could try contacting acas for more advice.

The law syas that part-timers shoudl not be treated less favourably than full-time staff. See
\link{http://www.dti.gov.uk/er/pt-detail.htm#leave\DTI Guidance} for more details.

the law says you shouldn't be treated differently.
and gmnt GUIDELINES say that if you work part time you should get pro rata bank holidays

HOWEVER... some places have a system that you get 4/5 of the BH entiltelemnt, and some have a different approach that if you don't work that day then you don't get an an in lieu day

So... in my company the people working mon-wed get proportionately more time off than those working full time, and the wed-friday (ie ME!) people get less time off as the bank holidays are just taken off if you work them.

This is not illegal becuase it discriminates agaisnt me because I work wed-fri, not becuase i work part-time. The other part timers do better out of it.
This was explained to me by ACAS I think, and a solicitor working for my house insurance company,
it was also the reason that my employer gave after having taken ;egal advice...so my colleague who came back to work after mat leave the same as me works approx 5 fewer days than me this yr for the same oney due to the fact that she got in forst and asked fot parttime at the beginning of the week

The spirit of the law says you shouldn't be discriminated against, but nobody has challenged the way that some employers do this.

Bitter, me, why no! Grin

oops, that's interesting. I think the lesson is that if you normally work mondays, you're better off in a company like yours or mine, if you don't, you're better off in a company that uses the 'pro-rata' system. I've been trying to persuade dh to change his day off to monday so that we get extra leave days!
