Any point applying for a full time job if you only want to work part time?

I've seen a job advertised that I would be interested in.

It is advertised as a full time position but I only want to work 3 days per week. My DS2 starts reception next year and I'm anxious to stick it out for another year before going back full time.

Is there any point in applying? If so, should I state at the outset that I am only interested in part time. Will they be very pissed off if I only mention it when if I am offered the job?

Experiences and views please.

Maybe depends if it is public or private sector as to whether they agree, ie private sector may have more flexibility to amend the terms the advert for a strong candidate, pub sector may be forced to readvertise, but of course you should mention it or you may be wasting your and their time otherwise.

(FWIW I wish I had suggested that before I took my current job, as I think they would have agreed...)

3 days a week yes you need to mention it beforehand. What would you expect them to do about the other two days, recruit a job share or do you genuinely think you could get the job done in 3 days?

If you wanted to do 4 days, or work compressed hours, and it wasn't a dealbreaker for you, you could apply without saying anything, then wow them at interview and take it from there.

But 3 days a week is a significant jump down so I would ring them and say you would be interested in doing part time, would they consider that and is it worth you applying on that basis.

Thanks, that's what I thought - just wanted to make sure I wasn't being overly honest!
