I'm considering owning a florists in a couple of years time, I know it will cost quite a bit to set up, I've got some experience and a natural artistic flair and would do some training in 3 shops prior to setting up.

Please share all the good points and the bad points with me..........

I'm trying to get a permit for road side selling but I'm having trouble because they want me to purchase public liability insurance to send with the form, I don't want to buy that IF they say no to my request............

What to do?

Hi there Xroads
Just been reading your thread and was wondering how you’re getting on with the floristry business.
I’m starting a full time floristry course in September and am keen to find out how others find the business.

There aren't many florists left anymore and there is a reason for this. I always buy flowers from a florist local time and they are superb in terms of quality and service an do have often chatted to the owner. She told me a few weeks ago that the only thing keeping her in business was the funeral directors next door. She's in a prime location, free parking, cheap rent, but people don't buy flowers anymore.
The only way I could see this working for you op is with an agreement with a company like a wedding planner or funeral director. You will also need a good online presence and to offer delivery.

I know absolutely naff all about floristry but I do mentor small businesses
The ones that fail do so mostly because they have been set up purely because it’s what the business owner wants to do rather than there being a real need or opportunity for it
Research what else is available in the location you want, a cafe owner I know recently went out of business after only 3 months when she opened in a village with 2 other cafes and several naice pubs. She had a great business plan etc but insisted there was enough business for another cafe - her only research was that the existing 2 “ seemed busy”
