Boring work question alert - having an appraisal next week...

...is it really necessary for four people from my (voluntary) council of management to attend it? Including the chairman-to-be who isn't even officially ON the board yet?

Don't mind having my boss (the chairman) and the deputy chairman there but not four of them (2 of whom have only just joined so have very little knowledge of what I have done over the last two years.

Is it worth kicking up over?

Oh Enid, it seems a bot of an overkill doesn't it? 4 people FGS. An appraisal is meant to be a 2 way exchange, how can that happen when you have 4 people!!!

I don't think you should kick up, but speak to your boss and say you don't feel it's appropriate to have all those people there!!

I used to have handouts from Appraisal Workshops, let me see if I can find them....

4 people is waaaaay over the top for an appraisal. Whereever I've worked it would be 1:1 or 2:1 at the very most. I wouldn't kick off, I'd just gently point out that 2 of them won't know anything and it might be a more effective meeting with just 2 of them and you.

4!!!??? no way!!! 1:1 should be the norm IMO

Enid · 16/03/2006 11:38

I have spoken to him and said I think it is a bit much to have four. He has agreed the chairman in waiting is overkill 'but didnt see how he could say no' wtf is wrong with these people arrrrrrrrrrgh.

Can I take someone with me?

Do the 2 new bods see it as opportunity to get to know you and what you do? If so then it should not be an appraisal at all. The appraisal should be rescheduled. I've worked in companies where the appraisal is just seen as a mere formality rather than an important opportunity - perhaps this is how it is viewed by everyone other than you and your boss.

Enid go to \link{http://www.acas.co.uk/index.aspx?articleid=16\Acas Appraisal website} And enter appraisal to search, and it brings up loads of info.

Download the Advisory Booklet and show it to them. What do they actually think an appraisal is?

Enid · 16/03/2006 12:41

thanks redtartanlass and franke

I have emailed him to say that I am more than happy to sit down with all of them and let them meet me and ask questions about my job and what I do here, but that I feel that should be a separate meeting and that my appraisal should be more formal affair between myself and the deptuy chairman only.

I have also emailed him a link to that website Grin
