Feel like I'm at a real crossroads...advice from anyone who's been there...??

To cut a long story short....been employed at middle management level with current employer for 15 years, but over recent years company has become increasingly more unpleasant to work for and I now get little or no enjoyment from my job.

Have been actively looking all year, have had success in getting interviews but always seem to get pipped at the post for the final offer (getting down to last 2 etc) I work part time (3 long days a week) so the jobs that can offer the flexibility I need at the mo are few and far between and very sought after.

While I'd much rather leave to go to a better job I am now seriously considering just resigning and just doing some office-y type temp work to tide me over until I get the permanent role I've been looking for.

Dh is reasonably well paid and as long as i could bring in about £300 a month we'd actually be no worse off as childcare and petrol expenses would be pretty much zero.

Thoughts? I think I've almost convinced myself but it's scary after so long to make myself unemployed. Has anyone been there? Did it work out? What benefits might I be entitled to that could help in the short term?

Thank You Smile

I've not been there exactly but I'd be very wary of doing this in case I couldn't get another job at the level I wanted. Is there any way you can go for ft with a view to working towards pt once you'd proved yourself in a new role? Have you a partner? Could s/he work pt for a while to cover the family responsibilities while you're ft?
Alternatively, would you like to be self-employed? Can you set up on your own & work the hours you want to?

Hi. Thanks for the reply. Dc are only 7 & 3 so ft is difficult without incurring massive childcare costs. Dh works ft in an environment where flexible working isn't exactly embraced. With his shift work and management responsibilities his role covers early and late shifts so would be hard to get someone to work pt opposite him. He would love to go pt tho Grin

Tbh I'm not even that sure if I want to return to a senior level role - I think I'd be quite happy at a lower level certainly while the dc are young although I appreciate that returning to such a role later on when I've been out of the 'loop' for so long may present difficulties! Aghh Smile

honestly I think that would not be a good move - depends on the job market in your area but in general getting a job while employed is much easier - I would work on interview practice - I did a good course at women like us, apply for full time jobs and then ask when you get a offer for some fleixability - might not be as good as three days - but I expect in the less stressful working enviroment and new chanllange you wold find it easier - I imagine your younger one is going to start school next september so childcare will get (alot) cheaper then so that is a really short term problem
