My daughter is due to leave nursery this week

  • which has somewhat spoilt my employer as the nursery hours are 7 to 7. When dd starts school next week dh will fo the morning run but I need tk do evening . After school
Club is only till 6. I am always happy to more than make up the hours in the morning. In march I asked my line manager informally if I could leave fifteen mnn early and make ul in the morning. The answer was no wouldn't be fair on others. Last month hr recommended I apply formally for flexible working but I sm worried if I do that it could nd unofficially held against me re bonus pay rise promotion etc . What are your views please j feel stuck

Well it certainly shouldn't be held against you, but without specific knowledge of that sector, it wouldn't surprise me.

However, if your informal request was refused, your options are a formal request or making alternative childcare arrangements - a childminder, after-school nanny or similar.

they refused you a 15minute difference when you offered to move your day forward by 15 minutes???

put a formal request in -I would liketo see the business case for not agreeing to that!

it would be illegal for them to hold it against you for bonuses/promotions etc

The 15 min was for after after school care. I am always more than happy to work either from home later on or earlier inthe morning. I have no family in the area to help after after school club and have always been very conscientious . I know that working in this sector requires sacrificing mother time to a degree but they don't seem willing to compromise at all.

they have a legal obligation to consider any request for family friendly working hours

they have to come up with a solid business cas to say no

I work in retail management, we are open 12 hours a day and obviously have to have manager cover for these hours

my family friendly hours are 8.15-5.15 term time (I have family that can help in school hols but too far away for term time so I use after school club)

I never expected them to agree to those hours but they did -it's always worth formally applying as you never know what the outcome may be

Thanks I have downloaded the request form and will fill it in

wow seems really petty they wouldn't even allow 15mins flexibility! (I also work in investment banking and IMO that is quite weird as normally hours are v long but not strictly from a set start to set end time. I'd be curious to know their 'business reason' for you needing to stay 15 more mins...)
