Working as a freelance teacher ... should I join a union?

I am embarking on a new career as a freelance teacher of MFL in primary schools but really don't know what to do about joining a union. I have 14 years teaching experience in secondary classrooms, so have always been in a union in the past. As I am only going to be working one day a week initially (after a career break), I really can't afford union membership, but know that I should probably have some sort of cover/back-up. Do any wise mumsnetters have advice for me on this? It would be greatly appreciated.

If you register as a supply teacher then the subs are minimal but you are still supported and you get the wonderful diary Smile

Yeah, I did think that might be the best option. Thanks. Forgot about the diaries and wall-planners and .... best of all .... a copy of 'Teaching Today' to leaf through on my days off Wink
