Should I go to the union?

I will try to keep this brief but will change some details as I dont want to out myself.

I work for a large company that has several sectors to it. I was a manager of a team in a sector. I was then offered a role as a manager within a different sector which i accepted (more job security). This was just over 12 months ago. When I started the role it wasnt ready as such so I was put into another role for a month until my role was "ready". There was 6 management vacancies and 1 of the vacancies was mine but they were for different departments in the sector.

I chose department A and another person chose departmen B. But then we were told that all the roles were being withdrawn as they couldnt get them approved. I was gutted and have been stuck in the admin role they put me in.

Anyway about 4 months ago I found out that the other person was given a managers job in Department A - which was supposed to be my job. I spoke to my manager straight away and told him that I was really unhappy about this and felt that they had been stringing me along.

He came out with the usual bullshit and even said that as the team was expanding more managers jobs would be available. I knew at the time it was just horse shit to get me to shut up and keep me dangling. I was also annoyed that nobody told me about it, I found out by reading an org chart.

The person who took my job has been off sick for 4 weeks and I have heard from a very reliable source that he wont be coming back to that role and they have given it to a manager from another sector despite knowing that I still wanted the role.

I dont know what to do. I fucking hate the role I am in now, hate it and always have, it is a boring manual admin job that anybody could do. My colleague who joined the team after me hates it also and cries all the time as the job is shit. I just feel that I have been kept dangling with empty promises.

The person who was given my job is part of the clique that goes out on the beer with my boss and the others and the new person who has been given the job is good friends with one of the bosses.

Will the union be able to help?

Do not know much about unions, but I have often used them as a sounding board in order to look at mu options. You can talk to them without them doing anything which means you will know whether you have a case, equally they can advice you on how to handle the situation in the first instance to get a more favourable solution.
