Employer promised p45, but they haven't notified HMRC I ever worked for them! What to do?

I worked for a fundraising agency for three weeks on a full time basis and was expecting a p45 as per usual.

The young man who organises the admin promised me that a p45 would appear, but he is now ignoring all communication re the p45 and fobbing me off all the time about it being in "soon".

I called HMRC and they said that they had no record from that employer and that I should simply fill in a p46.

I just wanted to make sure that this will not cause any trouble at a later date as it will not have been my first job in this tax year.

Does anyone know about this kind of stuff? I was going round in circles a bit with HMRC (who were very good about it, I must say).

Even if the company have submitted your P45/P46 in a timely manner it can take weeks for HMRC to process - I wouldn't worry yet.

They can however issue a P45 just the same using an old fashioned pen & paper if necessary. They have a while to provide this and maybe waiting to submit details on-line (which would need HMRC to have processed earlier one first) When did you leave?

Have you got payslips?

SingleMumByChoice · 18/08/2012 12:28

Last month. I've got evidence of the money being paid into my account, but they still haven't sent me the payslips either!

At the moment although employers are supposed to submit quarterly PAYE returns there is nothing to actually stop them only doing this at the end of the tax year

Next year when Real Time Information comes in they will have to submit details of money paid and tax deducted on the day it is paid. This is to try and stop this sort of situation

Saying that I have seen my mum have a nightmare trying to add employees on th Hmrc system with all sorts of bugs in the system

Don't worry it will be your employer liable for any unpaid tax, not you

Thank you so much for that, Revolting. (now there's a sentence I thought I'd never say!)

I think now I've logged it with HMRC, I won't worry any more.
