How far do you travel for work?

At the moment I have a nice easy 25 minute (ish) drive to work which is about 12 miles away.

I'm looking at changing jobs soon and am wondering about how far I'm willing to travel. A job I have seen is 36 miles away but it could take an hour/hour and a half to get to. There are two other jobs 80 and 100 miles away. For these i''d have to move (possibly without DP who couldn't move from where we are). I could do a Mon-Fri let. Long-term they are good for my career.

Just thinking at the mo, but wondered if you had any experience of relocating for work for the right job? No DCs yet. Thinking about it and maybe in the next 2-3 years.

anything up to 600-700 miles per day. My work is in Fermoy Co.Cork tomorrow so its a round 550-600 mile trip with the total driving time around 11-12 hours plus 9-10 hours on the job.

1 mile, total bliss.

Used to do 16 miles and found it draining.

TellyBug · 14/08/2012 23:44

Just one mile- wow! I think I'd still be in my office. Grin

200 yards - work as a TA at local primary school Grin

scurryfunge · 14/08/2012 23:50

Gosh, Bureni- what do you do? If you don't mind me asking.
I travel 10 miles in to work ( off peak hours, so very quick journey). DH works 400 miles away, so stays there during the week. We are trying to relocate for his job.

headfairy · 14/08/2012 23:50

80 miles round trip. 50 miles outward (I go the longer route via the M25 in the morning to avoid the London rush hour) and then 30 miles home in the evening when I go through town. Takes about 1 hr 15 mins in the morning and 50-60 mins in the evening.

elastamum · 14/08/2012 23:50

I have a 55 mile commute across the peak district, so not an easy drive. It is too far to do on a daily basis. It adds 3 hrs to my day and I am a LP so it affects my DC too. Fortunately I get to work from home a lot

TellyBug · 14/08/2012 23:51

You must be a driver bureni?

How do you find that commute headfairy? M25 is a nightmare whenever I've been on there!

bureni, when do you sleep?

I only travel 3 miles, which is fine.

DH travels a lot, so will drive for four hours for a one hour meeting and then home again, but that's all part of his job. I think he's crazy and wonder why he doesn't send me a post card most days!

lechatnoir · 15/08/2012 07:12

I commute into London so distance wise probably only 30oddmiles but it does take 1.5 + hrs each way & require quite an effort (car, train, tube, walk). I only do it 3 days now do far easier but it does make quite a difference to your day plus childcare options are limited & pricey if you need someone from 7am until after 7pm.

butisthismyname · 15/08/2012 07:16

I cycle into town - 10 mins Grin I am really lucky, I go past the railway station and just shudder at the thought of communiting to London every day.

WidowWadman · 15/08/2012 07:20

70 miles roundtrip when I go to the office, or just stumbling downstairs when I work from home. Before I had the opportunity to work from home I found the commute draining, now I'm quite ok with it

InMySpareTime · 15/08/2012 07:21

Just under a mile for me (day nursery) 6 minute commute by bike, 15 minute walk. I walk several miles while working thoughGrin.
DH works 3 miles away, 7-20 mins in the car, 20 mins on a bike. He's a software engineer. The difference is, we live in NW England, not London.

gamerwidow · 15/08/2012 07:25

10miles it takes about an hour with a combination of train and walking.
In theory it would take 20 minutes to drive but I know in practice in rush hour that wouldn't be the case plus there is no where to park at work so I'd have to park a minimum of 15 minutes walk away.
At least this way I get to read for a bit instead of being stuck in traffic.
This is probably the shortest commute I've ever had and I love it, in the past I've worked up to 2 hours away from work and it takes so much time out of your day it's not worth it.

violathing · 15/08/2012 07:27

about 12 miles but it is in windy country roads and takes about 25 mins. It is a real rush in term time. Drop DS at school for 855 and put my foot down ro get to work on time. Same on way home. Leave bang on 3 and put my foot down for 330. Live in middle of nowhere and have no choice but to travel everywhere by car

turkeyboots · 15/08/2012 07:39

Office is about 70 miles away. But I normally work from home so have no commute 4 days a week, and almost 4 hours on the other.

Jinsei · 15/08/2012 07:52

Less than a mile - 15 minutes walk. But we relocated 200 miles away for this job, so had the choice about where to live in relation to the office. It seemed pointless to build in a commute that wasn't actually necessary.

Before we moved, DH and I both had a five minute walk to work. Grin Life is too short to spend hours commuting...

ettiketti · 15/08/2012 08:05

Me and DH both work less than 5 miles away, about a 8-10minute drive. Bliss.

MakeTeaNotWar · 15/08/2012 13:56

71 miles each way - I commute Brighton - London by train which is a 4 hour round trip. Luckily DH works about 1km from home so he can do the nursery drop off and pick up
