Ill admit that this may not be the right place to post as I have been back in work for erm,,years since dd was born, but its the closest topic!

Is anyone else expected to be in work 20 mins before they start and 10 after they leave? Personally, I feel this is unfair -Im not doing any work in this time, just setting up my computer, but I hate that its unpaid time! Am I just picking at wee things cause Im already annoyed at employer, or do you think this is a valid point to raise?

Ive just been pulled aside for being 1 min late back from lunch break...grrrr

erm...that should say 10 mins after they are supposed to leave

No.

I start at 8.30 am whcih means to me I should be sitting at my desk ready to go at 8.30. This doesn;t mean getting in 20 minutes beforehand. Depending on the traffic I get there between 0-10 mins early!

I close my PC down at 12.30 which is when I finish and usually leave straight away.

I know managers sometimes think badly of clockwatchers but I have to collect DS from nursery so have no choice.

Do you have a hand over to/from otehr staff, is that teh reason?

I have to set up the ancient computer whih takes 5 mins (though i can make coffee in that time) then I have to open and log in to 10 different applications, and read emails (im off all week, so there may be 80-100 emails to read) before i start my shift at 9am. I cant log off til 6pm on the dot, and it takes a good 7-10 minutes to log out (we have to key in passwords before computer actually shuts down-some clocking software thing) so cant just click x in all applications and run out the door. night shift com in at 3.30, so not waiuting for them!

I have certain colleagues who have commitments (largely childcare), and I fully understand they can't be in early or leave late, except in exceptional circumstances.

I also have a particular colleague who lives 20 mins away from the office - when she joined us our office was 1 hr. away from her home - and she still manages to get in just 1 minute before 9, and is turning everything off 10 minutes before home time. That tells me that she does not enjoy her time here - so to be honest, I'd rather she wasn't!

Sounds ridiculous. Surely it matters how much work you actually do? I can tell you from my office that the people who work 2 hours later than everyone are not necessarily more efficient. Do you work in a call centre-type job by any chance? I think they are the worst clock watchers....

Lmccrean · 10/03/2006 14:47

yeah its a call center :( i love the work, its the people i hate lol

If reading emails is considered part of your work duties then why are you expected to do this outside of your paid shift? Also, if you are paid till 6pm, then why are you still beigh forced by the system to still be working 10 minutes later, and why id the system forcing you to wait for an interminable time before you can start work? These are system problems, not yours. You should not be forced to effectivly pay for their failures. Log how much overtime you are doing and present your employers with a claim. Join a union.
