Working on a bar??? New to this...

I've never worked Ian bar or retail, I've been in high pressured jobs for years. Now I am studying and looking for retail/bar jobs! I think I would enjoy it for now and have more time to concentrate on myself and dd. she is 5 and I am a single mum!

So Saturday night I have a trial at a local cocktail bar, it's good fun in there. But not sure if it will be crazy and manic to work in! If I get it they will only want me to work Friday and Saturday nights!

Ive also got a interview lined up for Wednesday for a shop, so thinking if I got te shop job could maybe work at the pub 1 night per week for extra cash!

Sunday night I have a trial night for a quiter slightly posh type job! They could want me to work possibly days, nights weekends! Bit sounds like it can be flexible!

Which one do you think sounds best? Do you think it can work for a single mum working in a pub? My mum can help out with child care if needed, but if I had set days like in a shop or something then, dd could go to after school club maybe!

Which job do you think will be better?

Working in a bar or restaurant is physically demanding, more physically exhausting than you'll be used to. If it's busy your shifts will pass in a whirl, which is good. I guess you need to consider things like getting home safely when finishing work at midnight as well.

Not sure what the second job you described is... posh type job?? Do you mean a more upmarket bar?

Don't under estimate the physical element of catering/hospitality jobs like waitressing and bar work. It is non stop but very rewarding in terms of opening up a new social circle (of others who work in same jobs). It has very unsociable hours and like the other poster said, getting back at 1am isn't nice (especially when you've worked in a loud bar and you can't then "switch off" straight away!)

Also I would add that retail/shop work isn't always 'set' days. In today's market, flexibility is massive as it is hard to set rota's in budget when people can't do any wednesdays or Thursday mornings or the 2nd Monday of the month etc. Rota's may change week by week (or by month) depending on business needs, holidays and sickness of other staff.

What about looking in to tea rooms or cafes? They're more 'set' with hours around school etc. also they tend to be run by family's and therefore are more family friendly (or go with the premiss 'you scratch our back, we'll scratch yours')

Good luck Smile

Sorry yes I meant upmarket pub, and getting home isn't a problem as I drive.

Did the cocktail bar trial last night and was thinking about leaving around 9ish as it was quite and I was told to talk to people and I felt awkward and I felt like they might have thought I wasn't talking to anyone, but there was no one to talk to Confused

Anyway it got busier and got more fun! But was hard work and had to stay 2 hours after closing to clean up. Wow I never new how much work goes on after closing Hmm

They were happy with my work and told me to work friday and Saturday every week!

The thing is as I'm parttime they are not likely to ever train me up to do the cocktails, and one of the guys there said I will always be the bitch Confused so although it was fun I'm not sure about that one!

I thought tea rooms and cafes would need someone from very early like 6 or 7? And I won't be able to start work before 9am a I need to take dd to school!
