In the last 10 days I have chosen at least 4 new career directions for myself

  1. Open a nursery
  2. Open a shop selling 2nd hand baby equipment
  3. Do a degree
  4. Retrain as a teacher

As each has lasted less than 3 days........I think I need help
Any advise? Or suggestions for sources of advise?
tia

Wait i went thru a cross roads a few years ago see which one you keep comming back to. If you're serious about teaching then contact your local school to see if you can visit and observe some lessons

Some of those business ideas carry a certain level of risk - are you a risk taker?

Write a list of your strengths and weaknesses not very orginal I know but I sometimes think we would all like to do xyz but there are not always the things we are good at.

Katymac · 06/03/2006 19:08

Hmm - I'll work on my lists

I started this business in April '03 and it doesn't need me any more - but it brings an income

I feel a bit lost and "rudderless"

Can't help saying it must be nice! But be sure to keep your eyes on the prize. I suppose if you did a degree and your other business needed your attention you could postpone modules without letting others down or incurring costs.

I teach secondary - its good for school hols and you can do supply or teach night classes but it can be very intense during certaintimes of hte year and there is a lot of pessure to improve/maintain attainment. Yes i get v stressed and pissed off and cynical but I still enjoy my job (once ive got thru commute!!) If you like structure and routine combined with the creativity of planning lessons then it could be for you. However there is the grind of marking and reports. Then of course you've got the students!

bigbaubleeyes · 06/03/2006 19:16

Isnt there an online thingy where you put your strengths and weaknesses etc in and it tells you what profession you should work in?

freshstart · 06/03/2006 19:17

Does your childminding really not need you anymore!! Must say Im rather jealous! It must be very satisfying to see the children all looked after in a way your happy with yet not require you to do the "graft"

Are you happy not to be home based anymore?

Katymac · 06/03/2006 19:23

Yep - the minding is self supporting the ladies I employ & my DH will work together and look after the children

I will still make policy decisions and set prices and maybe even do the contracts - but they will do the minding

I need something els to do

I would be interested in doing an on-line thingy if you find it bigbaubleeyes I like structure - but only structure I impose (iyswim) I do like being in charge (benevolent despot??)

If you like control then classrooms are the perfect place for you to try and impose it!

bigbaubleeyes · 06/03/2006 19:36

Put these into google theres a few interesting sites come up - havn't checked them all closely but there should be something in there to help you:

Never mind I guess I need to see a professional

clerkKent · 07/03/2006 12:50

I saw a professional careers advisor once. hey started off asking me what I thought I wanted to do, then I sat a battery of tests. When I got the written report a couple of days later, they recommended the things I had said in the first place. I don't remember them adding anything new.

I seem to remember that you have asked for advice on management issues on MN once or twice. Do you want a career where you do a lot of management? Working for your self or others? Working from home? Related to babies/children? Public sector/ private / not-for-profit? Small organisation or large? If you have views on all these questions, it will narrow down the options.

Katymac · 07/03/2006 17:54

I've made an appointment to see a (free) career advisor tomorrow....so we'll see

Katymac - what happened? How did it go?

clerkKent · 10/03/2006 09:04

Katy, I got this email today:

Why choose Career Management?
Who are these people who earn £500K £750K? What do they do to justify that package? Where did they find that job? How did they find that job? Are they a higher life form?

One thing is for sure, they did not walk into it. Nobody gets to be MD without having their sights firmly set. They need to have:

A plan
A coach/mentor

She said she was out-of-her depth

She has referred me to some other agencies, so I'll see

Katymac- if its any help my friend did a TV programme with that 'dragons den' business man Duncan Ballantine and she asked him how to become a millionaire and he said 'open a chain of nurseries'. But maybe that is not your motivator?

Katymac · 12/03/2006 19:08

I don't need mega rich the C/ming is covering my day to day living

I just need a pension (as DH is older than me)

I suppose I could just open a Nursery (Just??Grin) - but it doesn't appeal that much
