Just wondering about this. DD (16) has a job in a cafe. She works on a rota but sometimes they will tell her that its not busy enough and that she is to go home unpaid after a couple of hours, so paid for the 2 hours but not the other four she was supposed to be working. If she has been told she is to work 6 hours can they just send her home after 2? thanks

Unless employment law has changed then yes I think so. I have had two jobs that have done this, once when I had a zero-hours contract in a pub and once when I had a shift job (v large company), but this employer paid you 0.5 time for the hours you were sent home for, which was in my employment contract

Her employment contract might clarify what the company procedure is?

This happens to DS too (also works in a cafe). But even if it isn't legal, he wouldn't want to rock the boat in a job he doesn't want to lose. After all, they could just call in someone else to work his next shift.

What does her contract say about hours?
