I do Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday which is great from a personal perspective but from a work perspective it's a bit of a nightmare, if something goes wrong on a Thursday afternoon I can't deal with it until the following Tuesday.

But the benefit is that I don't have to juggle annual leave for bank holidays as these are all pro-rata but lumped into one allowance and most bank holidays are a Monday. Also, my nursery are never busy on a Friday so if I need to fit in an extra days work I can always get an extra day for dd with no hassle at short notice.

I'd do Tue, Wed, Thu.

I currently do 3 days Mon-Wed & end up using loads of annual leave to cover local/public holidays, as they're always Mondays. Schools here finish a half day on Fridays so have avoided that as a working day

Pancakeflipper · 19/07/2012 16:43

I do Mon, Tues. Weds.

HR have finally sorted out the Bank Hols issues.

I like it cos I get to be with my toddler for 4 days in a row. I can usually get to my DS1's school concerts ( held on a Thurs). And I hate Mondays so I might as well go to work instead of hating them at home. And on Weds afternoon - my weekend begins!!!!!

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 19/07/2012 16:50

I do weds, thurs fri.

It suits us well. I get bank holidays pro rata so I do well from that. We are often away at weekends so I get the chance to get sorted, clean and shop before my days in work. Monday's are also very busy in work, I find I can be more productive at the end of the week too.

I've done Tuesday / Wednesday / Thursday, Monday / Tuesday / Thursday and now do Wednesday / Thursday / Friday.

  1. Tues / Wed / Thurs - would suggest this is the ideal from a personal point of view. You get a good "run" at the work (good from a continuation point of view) but then what feels like a very long weekend. It also works very well to avoid Mondays for most part timers - I get 6 days added to my annual leave (3/5 of 10 bank holidays) but if a bank holiday falls on one of my normal work days, I have to use a days holiday. I would have used 5 of the 6 days for Monday Bank holidays this year. As I only work 3 days, this has given me almost 2 weeks "extra" leave. Its also quite good to not work Fridays once you have school children as there are often early finishes on a Friday, any Christmas / choir performances etc tend to be on a Friday and it just seems there are more parents around on a Friday for playground chitchat!!
  1. Mon / Tues / Thurs - better from a work point of view as you're only out of the office for one work day at a time, but I thought it dragged the week out and I felt it was harder to manage work on days that were not consecutive.
  1. Wed/Thurs/Fri - current arrangement - all the pros of avoiding MOndays, still get my 4 day extended weekend. Friday seems quieter on the roads (I commute) in the mornings and its slightly more relaxed.

Just started a new job and am doing Mon.Tue, and Wednesday morning (paid for 2 1/2 days but have to pay for three days childcare due to long commute). It's not really working out so well because I feel a bit lost by Thursday afternoon with all of Friday to go before the weekend. I'm thinking of changing it to Tue, Wed, Thu if the nursery has a space on those days. Also if I start Tue I'd have more chance to get ready for work on Mondays rather than getting stressed on Sunday afternoon.

cheekypickle · 21/07/2012 11:53

I'm starting part time in sept. 3 days of mon, tues and weds

Murtette · 21/07/2012 23:18

Tues, Weds & Fri. No Sunday night blues as I have Monday off; there's never more than one working day between the days I am in the office; Fridays are a bit more relaxed in the office & the commute is generally quieter; my days with the DC are broken up (which I have been particularly grateful for in the recent bad weather); I'm not out of the house for too many consecutive days meaning I get to stay on top of household stuff; where I live, there are good local toddler groups on a Monday & Thursday morning.

KatoPotato · 21/07/2012 23:25

I work Mon, Tues and Friday. This way I'm never away from work or home more than three days running.

Being at work at the beggining and end if the week means there's no bottle necks of unanswered emails or missing copy deadlines.

Ambi · 21/07/2012 23:35

I used to do Tues-Thurs (old job) which was great,no Sun blues and Friday feeling on a Thurs. I'm negotiating returning from my current FT job to 3 days but will likely be Wed-Fri as my job increases workload to Fridays. I love my current job but FT is killing me, looking forward to going back to 3 days, I found it was the absolute perfect balance of home/ work.

BackforGood · 21/07/2012 23:56

Depends on your job, and also the age of your dcs.

"Fun" things, and assemblies thay want you to go to at school are much more likely to be on Fridays than other days, so that's a good day to have off with school age children. Training days are often on Mons and Fris too, so worth keeping in mind.

Some work places are more relaxed on a Friday - which you may want to be part of or may want to avoid

In my job, it's best to avoid working Mondays, as you use up a whole day's worth of annual leave every time there is a bank holiday, but you are only getting 3/5 of one in your holiday entitlement - which makes quite a difference over a year as 4 are always Mondays and 3 move around.

I used to work M/Tu/We and now work Tu/We/Th. I absolutely LOVE the fact that I don't have to have got everything done on Sunday evening - I can't believe what a difference it makes to my mood- didn't realise how depressing I found Sun evenings until they stopped!

Also, I find I get so much more done - be it housework, paperwork or whatever - around the house on a Monday, then I did on a Thursday.... I think you psychologically think it's the weekend, and slow down a bit.

If you want appts, or to go shopping, etc., then it's generally quieter on a Monday / Tuesday than at the end of the week which is a bonus.

Depends on your job though - some people (not me) find they cover the work better if they are there every other day - to my mind that suggests they are not really switching off and fully benefitting from the 4 days off work, but, they argue they are taken more seriously if their customers / clients don't get the message "She'll get back to you next week".

sleeplessinsuburbia · 22/07/2012 00:09

This is a great thread. I'm working 4 days but will drop to 3. I found 4 days is too much because I felt expected to do a full week in it. It's a big decision choosing the days...

MidnightKnitter · 23/07/2012 11:32

I work Friday, Saturday, Sunday whuxh usually saves us needing childcare. Not an issue at the moment but might get awkward when ds are at school and i'll hardly see them.

reshetima · 23/07/2012 12:26

Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. Never too long a break from work, or from home for that matter.

Biggem · 24/07/2012 18:17

I did mon / weds / thurs but have just changed it to tues/weds/thur as I am preggers again and people keep telling me I struggle (dd1 is 14 months) so I have a longer break and dd has more consistency with 3 straight days sans mummy.
