Just finishing off my PhD, and.....

I have seen a job advertised that fits perfectly, not only with the topic of my thesis, but also with my previous work experience.

Unfortunately it's a very, very long way away from where I live & there's no way I could uproot my family. It is only a 1 year contract though, so it would be for a relatively short, fixed time.

Is it insane to even consider it? I did have a job a few years ago that involved a lot of overseas travel & we somehow made it work (I am not short of support from family, friends, neighbours, but even going away for a couple of days a couple of times a month would be small fry compared to this!)

It's not as if I see hundreds of suitable opportunities every week. In fact, I can't remember when the last time was I saw one at all!

Opinions?

Could it be done remotely?

If you have put in the effort needed to do a PhD you are clearly ambitious. My gut feeling would be to,say go for it, but it does depend on how your family feels. How supportive are they about it? A lot of people do work away during the week and are home at weekends. Is this the scenario you are envisaging?

Actually applying in itself might clarify things a bit, for you and your family, as it would make it seem more real, and would make everyone think about the implications. But you should discuss it as openly as you can. And make sure that applying doesn't make it a fait accomplit without proper discussion first.

Thanks for your input.

@holeyghost - I suspect bits of it probably could be done remotely. It would be quite likely to entail some travel away from where the job's based, which might offer the opportunity for some flexibility. I guess if I get as far as applying i could see how they would feel about that.

@ihearthucakbees - I've emailed the advert to my husband but not had anything back yet. I emailed him a similar job a few months ago & he wasn't terribly positive about that one (& it wasn't as far away as this one is).

Ugh. Why are amazing opportunities never on my doorstep??

If there is any possiblility of working from home much of the time, then you should apply. With videoconferencing etc, most jobs can be done that way, if the will is there.

When u say finishing off what do you mean. If you havent yet submitted i would be very wary about working especially if it requires so many adjustments. I started a new job after my defence but would have struggled to do so before

Depends if it's lab work (science) where you have to be 'at work' most days or socal science where yo can legitimately work from home a lot of the time. I would go for it and worry about how you're going to manage it once you've bee offered the job tbh. Research posts are few and far between at the moment and there may be a lot of competition anyway so no harm to test the water by applying
