possible redundancy and flexible working

My boss rang me this morning to inform me, in the interest of fairness (sic), that should there be redundancies in our imminent restructuring that I may wish to reconsider my request for flexible working which is up for review in September. I currently work 2 days a week instead of 4, and I have done this for 2 years now. He said that there may not be any redundancies but he is obliged to give me the option. I can't ask to go back to 4 days and then change my mind to go back to 2 if I don't get made redundant as I can only make one flexible working request every 12 months. I really want to stay on 2 days but this will obviously affect any package should I get made redundant. Am not sure what to do- any thoughts?

Going back full time (4 days) is not a flexible working request though, so if you go back FT and dont get made redundant you can put the request in then. IYSWIM?

I will check it out but my understanding is that any request to change the current arrangement counts as a request, so would include asking to revert to 4 days. But thanks, I will check it for sure

I hope so! Have email our personnel for the docs as I can't access them online from home.

The request to increase to four from two isn't to care for your child so it would not come under the right to request flexible working.

It's simply a request to increase your working hours.

Hang on, why is your previous request up for review? When you made the request two years ago, it was a request. Once it had been agreed, it became your permanent terms and conditions, and doesn't need reviewing.

A request to increase your days wouldn't come under the flexible working regs, so wouldn't affect your right to request to go back to two again. Flex working requests under the regs need to be for the purpose of looking after your children, so asking to increase your hours wouldn't count.

Personally if you want to keep your current hours I would do that, rather than risk them refusing a request later on after you've increased,

thanks hairytale and flowery- I hadn't considered this but you are right. It may be a way of getting me to go back up to 4 days as I have a feeling that my boss is irritated by my being 2 days so this might be a way he could get round me going back up to 4. Perhaps I need to speak to Personnel directly
