Dont know if this is the right place to post but...
i want to become a midwife, ive just been accepted at college to do my acess course for 1 year and then apply to uni to become a midwife I have a ds 14 months - but ive just though, how could i be a mifwife? DP shifts are set in stone he works when he is suppose to and thats it, so how the hell if i qualify am i going to be a midwife and be a mum when things like school holidays happen?!

once you're qualified it might be ok, as you can work part time, bank or whatever your trust will let you do. it's the training that I would imagine is going to be hard, because you have to work your hours, write your essays etc. at my uni they were not at all understanding of student mw with children. It's more than full time. I found working as a qualified midwife a breeze compared to uni. Some unis offer a part time course which takes longer but may be easier with dp's shifts and a toddler.

saying that, it can be done if you're organised and dedicated. a colleage had 3 children, youngest 18 months when she started. she managed it and is a fantastic mw now (working a lovely 1 day a week). If you've got good, flexible childcare that's half the battle.

Good luck!

I have a 6, 4 and 19mth old and am nearing the end of my first year training. The 'set in stone' shifts will help surely? You just have to organise childcare to fit precisely around them - ie. assume you're unavailable. Then use the time as required to do shifts and/ or study - if you're around on DH's days off, so be it, otherwise you're studying! That's the principle anyway, any extra time fitted in with the children is a bonus. I can't emphasise how hard it is though, but worth it.

PS. I actually had only 2 unis to choose from, but one had integrated uni/ practice weeks, rather than month on/ month off so I chose the first one. Knowing I am working school hours the same 2 days a week is so helpful.
